- I personally contacted all 54 patients, invited most of them to the practice, and issued the certificates based on medical findings (including COPD, asthma, anxiety disorders).
- I could not expect some patients in winter to travel through snow or a long distance, and in those cases I always had a very detailed medical report sent to me by email.
- The certificates were consistent with my medical conviction and the Geneva Declaration.
- I did not issue a single certificate as a favor – I also refused to do so for relatives, acquaintances, or fellow activists
Despite everything, I would act the same way again.
I can be very proud that to this day I still receive esteem and respect from many people. I am grateful for the higher guidance during this time.
Through my public appearances and speeches, I gave many people courage and orientation. My patients had a right to individual medical assessment, and I had the duty to provide it.
I am also grateful that this time has opened eyes and that I have gained more strength than weakness from it.
I hope that this documentation contributes to informing the public about what has happened to doctors in this country – and that it never happens again.
The day after Christmas, police appeared unexpectedly at midday outside Dr. Wasmer’s private residence. The patrol vehicle was positioned so that it was impossible to miss from the entire length of the street – roughly 400 metres – visible to all neighbours. The commanding officer was the chief of the local police station – the same one who had already led the raid on the practice. Before even reaching the driveway, his colleague informed Dr. Wasmer that his financial situation would be fully disclosed at the Regional Court hearing.
For the appeal hearing, the smallest courtroom was deliberately selected – despite the knowledge that a large number of spectators were expected. The large courtroom had been reserved for a murder trial.
Just minutes after the judge ordered that only thirteen persons could remain in the courtroom, an obviously pre-informed police unit arrived. What followed was a deployment in company strength: all entrances and exits of the courthouse were locked, even the access to the toilets was sealed off with barrier tape or controlled by police. The sirens alarmed the entire city centre. Police vehicles parked sideways blocked the central pedestrianised street for roughly one hour, obstructing even the tramway.
Nearly one hundred of the affected spectators signed a criminal complaint on the spot, covering eight offences, which was filed by a lawyer on the basis of protocols drawn up immediately. Receipt of this complaint was not confirmed until more than half a year later – the dismissal came with a twelve-page justification that was in parts demonstrably erroneous.
